The Plainview Chamber of Commerce awarded a number of Plainview residents, neighbors, business owners and friends with the 2024 Outstanding Awards at this year’s Klown Festival on Saturday. Winning the Citizen of the Year award was longtime resident and business operator, Lois Moser, who retired after nearly 40 years of service to Town & Country locally just this June. The Cool Beanz Coffee Truck – Jamie and Samantha Alexander and Holden Wetzler, was the committee’s choice for the “Outstanding Business” this year. The Wayne and Judy Rasmussen Family was chosen as the “Outstanding Farm Family” this year – with more than 50 years of service to the agricultural community in a variety of unique farming ventures, and now on a multigenerational farm. The “Outstanding Plainview Supporter” this year was given to Larry and Mary Petersen for their work in the community – especially at the Plainview Senior Center and helping their friends and neighbors. Graduating Senior Kayci Daudt was named the Chamber’s “Outstanding Youth” for the 2024 year for her service to the Rainbow Girls, Eastern Star, community service, local work ethic, her volunteer hours and her service through music to the community. Each year the Chamber of Commerce requests nominations for 4-5 “Outstanding Awards” that are given out during the festivities on Saturday evening during the Plainview Klown Festival.

The Plainview Pirates Legion Seniors Baseball team earned a victory in its first game of the season on Friday, May 31 in Atkinson. The Plainview Pirates boys’ and girls’ basketball teams were well-represented at the fifth annual NVC-North Central Nebraska Senior All Star Basketball Games on Friday, May 24 at O’Neill High School. Get the rest in this week's Plainview News!

Memorial Day services were held at the Plainview High School auditorium under the direction of the Plainview American Legion Post #148 and its Auxiliary. Around 50 attended, with many from the Plainview community helping to memorialize the fallen soldiers. These honored heroes included: Joseph M. Acklie, Forrest Albin, Donald G. Bivens, Ellard F. Born, William R. Carpenter, Everett M. Casselman, Robert W. Couchman, Lloid R. Florer, Claire Fryer, Wesley W. Fulton, Willis C. Hass, Floyd M. Hansen, Gene R. Hecht, Lorenz F. Hoffart, Dwight Houston, Lorin C. Joyce, Elsworth L. Keil, Andrew J. Lingenfelter, Philip Luckert, Gene Manke, Wendell Miller, Gary Mullins, Edward D. Nelson, Leo E. Risse, Franklin W. Ritter, and Kenneth Suhr.

Madelynn Dougherty (center, front) recently signed her letter of intent to run track at Midland University next season. Dougherty was a senior at PHS this year, graduating on May 11. The 2024 Commencement Ceremony was held at Plainview Public Schools last Saturday, May 11, announcing this year’s top academics and awarding the 23 eligible graduates. The 131st graduating class from PHS cross the stage, handed out flowers and heard of scholarships and awards won. fThis year’s Valedictorian was Abigail Kromarek, daughter of Cody and Elizabeth Kromarek, and this year’s Salutatorian was Katie Mauer, daughter of Kelly and Lisa Mauer. Senior Kayci Daudt led the audience in the National Anthem, Superintendent Dr. Darron Arlt gave the school welcome, and senior Reagan Choat provided the class motto and a thank you from the class. The High School Choir, under the direction of Instructor Brittani Beegle, performed “I Am Still Your Dreamer,” with Weston Hoffman as accompanist. Hoffman also played the processional and recessional (as a correction from the program.) Principal Kyle Schmidt presented the class honors, and scholarships were announced by Guidance Counselor Jeremy Peter. Board President Tim Rasmussen, with Schmidt and Arlt’s assistance, handed out the diplomas. Processional Leaders this year were Hannah Darnall and Karter Lingenfelter. Due to a delay in the graduation information for this year’s insert – the publication will accompany next week’s Plainview News.

The Plainview boys and girls track and field teams finished out their season with top five team performances at the 2024 NSAA Class D Track and Field Invite in Omaha on Friday and Saturday, May 17 and 18. After a competitive season full of ups and downs, the Pirates came to play in Omaha. With three separate Pirate competitors qualifying in four separate events, along with numerous other qualifiers, the Pirates had a good shot of coming home with some hardware. Leading the way for the Pirates boys team was senior Spencer Hille. Hille, who qualified for the State Invite in four separate events, ended his career as a Pirate as well as anyone would’ve hoped for... Demolition, tree removal and new construction... A small house south of the Plainview Public Library was recently purchased by the City and demolished to allow for a larger parking area at the library. A new, wider sidewalk leading to the park shelter in Chilvers Park was repoured earlier this week. New landscaping was being worked on outside the Plainview Public Library last week as well. Prior to the rain, city crews were busy in the park removing dead trees to clear the way for new planting. Plainview High School Senior Teya Boyer, daughter of Dean and Christi Boyer, was honored with a number of athletic records broken during her senior year that had been previously unannounced until the records could be completed. Boyer took the leadership board with three records: Kills in a Season with 322 (previous was Andrea Haase with 283). Career Kills with 767 (also previously Haase with 690.) Service Aces in a Career with 180 (previous was Carissa Wacker, 165). Boyer’s post season will continue as she has been tapped for three All-Star games she’s been chosen to play in as well: The Northeast Nebraska All-Star Volleyball Light Team, North Central Nebraska All-Star Basketball Team, and the Northeast Nebraska All-Star Basketball Light Team.

THIS SATURDAY: Plainview High School will be holding its annual commencement services this weekend, starting at 2 p.m. Twenty-three students in the Class of 2024 will be eligible to cross the stage for their high school graduation diploma. Kromarek signs at Concordia... Plainview High School Senior, Abigail Kromarek, signed her letter of intent to play college-level basketball at Concordia University in Seward in the coming year last fall, but just recently took pictures with college staff and family and friends to commemorate the event. She is pictured here with her parents, Liz and Cody Kromarek (front row left and right); and Coaches Kelly Lingenfelter, Brittany White and Kim Miller.

The FFA banquet was held on April 18th at Plainview Public Schools. The night began with Regan, our former president, saying grace. After everyone ate their meals and had light conversation, the banquet was ready to begin... For more details, sign up to the Plainview News!

The Plainview Pirate boys golf team fought hard at three separate invites this past week, ending with the Lewis and Clark Conference Invite on April 29. After a tough week, the Pirates will continue their regular season on Friday, May 3 at the Stanton Invitational. This will be the only invite on the Pirate’s schedule in the upcoming week...
