Lady Pirates Win Last Home Game

The Plainview Lady Pirate girls’ basketball team took their last home, and regular season game, in grand fashion, winning over the visiting Creighton Lady Bulldogs last Friday, Feb. 10.

The evening doubled as parents’ night, and that may have helped give the girls motivation to take the game from the Lady Bulldogs, 55-43, at the final buzzer.

The Lady Pirates jumped out an early lead, 12-7 in the first, and rounded that up to 28-15 to lead the game heading into the halftime break. A 13-10 third quarter, and 14-18 fourth, gave the Lady Pirates enough of a lead to hold on for the win.

Teya Boyer came out ready to play, posting near all the team’s points in that first quarter with eight off two-point goals and two free throws – she added another six in the third and four in the second half to lead her team’s scoring with 20 points total against Creighton.

Abbie Kromarek was next with 12 points total. Keanu Johnson, Madelynn Dougherty and Marque Albin each had six points, and Lauren Jelinek posted five for her team as well.

The Lady Pirates’ next game was to be held Tuesday, Feb. 14 in the first round of the Class D1-5 Subdistrict tournament in Niobrara against the Elgin Public/Pope John Lady Wolfpack. The Lady Pirates were ranked third in the subdistrict bracket with their 13-11 record.

A win will put them in the subdistrict final, game four, and they’ll play the winner of Niobrara-Verdigre and Boyd County.

Vs. O’Neill
The Plainview Lady Pirates posted an 11 point loss to the O’Neill Lady Eagles when the teams faced off on February 7 on the road in O’Neill.

The Lady Pirates trailed by seven at the half, and though the teams were both high-scoring in the second (24 to Plainview and 28 to O’Neill), the Lady Pirates couldn’t make up the distance, falling by 11, 48-37 to the home Eagles.

Leading the scoring for the Lady Pirates was Teya Boyer with 15 total off four field goals and seven free throws. Abbie Kromarek marked 10 points for her team; Keanu Johnson had six points, Marque Albin posted four and Lauren Jelink had two.
