Hannah Darnall Up For a Spike Against O’Neill.

The Pirate Volleyball team took on a new face in this year’s Jamboree event, welcoming the O’Neill Eagles to the home court, and picking up a win on their first game of the season.

The Pirates took a three sets-to-one victory (15-25, 26-24, 25-11, 25-19).
“It was a good start to our season. There are a lot of takeaways from this game for us to build on in our practices. The girls really found their groove after a bit of a slow start and played well.” said Coach Kim Miller.

Offensively, the team had a strong hitting night. In 127 attempts, the team only had 23 attacking errors.

Leading the way in hitting for the team was Teya Boyer with eight kills; Shayla Jacobsen had a consistent night at the net hitting 0.333%. Continuing with the offensive leaders, recording two aces each from the service line was Hannah Darnall and Madelynn Dougherty. The set assist leader was Boyer with 15 to her name.

On the defensive end, Boyer and Dougherty covered the floor with 11 digs each.
Dougherty also had a strong night from serve receive, with only two errors on 27 attempts. Darnall had a hand in five blocks, while Jacobsen was a part of four. “Defense is our biggest focus this season. We have strong hitters but will often be the smaller team in our games. Our ability to keep the ball off the floor will be key.” said Coach Miller.

Next up for the Pirates will be a home dual against Wakefield on Thursday, August 24.
All three teams will be in action with the C team beginning at 5:30 p.m., Junior Varsity at 6:30 p.m., and Varsity at 7:30 p.m.

This weekend will also bring a host of teams to the school on Saturday with the Varsity playing a Quad with Boone Central, Boyd County, and Stuart and the JV playing a triangular against Boone Central and Boyd County.
