Lady Pirates sweep Flyers at home

The Plainview Pirate Volleyball team took to the road on Thursday, and brought home a three set sweep of the St. Francis Flyers (25-14, 25-18, 25-16).

“Our defense showed up tonight. Not many balls hit the floor and the passes went where they needed to go. This really allowed our offense to showcase what it can do and our stat lines show it,” said Coach Kim Miller.

On the defensive end, Abbie Kromarek led in digs with 14 followed by Madelynn Dougherty with 11. Teya Boyer led at the net with three blocks and Hannah Darnall walled up two. Offensively, the hitters came to play. Boyer recorded 19 kills and a 0.357 hitting percentage. Darnall had 12 kills and a 0.333 hitting percentage.

Kromarek had 10 kills and a 0.368 hitting percentage. Assisting in those kills was Boyer with 19 and Marque Albin with 14. Brooke Rafert led at the service line with two aces.

Next up for the Varsity level was a home dual against Wausa on Tuesday, Sept. 12. This will be the annual Youth Night event, with free admission for the Junior Pirate volleyballers.

September 14 the team will travel to Laurel, and Tuesday, Sept. 19 the team will host Elkhorn Valley.

JV vs. Flyers

The Junior Varsity Pirate Volleyball Team added another win to their record with a two set victory over the Flyers of Humphrey St. Francis.

Set scores were 25-20 and 25-19.

Communication was our biggest hurdle with a very quiet gym, which led to some dropped balls and lack of movement, said Coach Christi Boyer.

“Again, we dug ourselves in quite a hole in the second set, but we were again able to rally to capture this victory.  The group will continue to work on starting out strong then staying strong start to finish.”

Serving well for the Lady Pirates was Emma Sauser with four aces to her name on the night.  Hitters started out going a little long but adjusted and started finding the floor on their side.  Kaydence Maertins led the kill category with five.  Mallory Mauer topped the assists with six.

Vs. Creighton

On Tuesday, the volleyball team welcomed Creighton to the Pirate gym and took the win with a sweep (25-13, 25-10, 25-13).

“This was a good win for the girls. They played at a consistent level, which is what we have been looking for. It was good to see.” said Coach Kim Miller.

Leading the Pirates on the offensive side was Teya Boyer with ten kills. Boyer was also the set assist leader with 14 to her name.

Boyer, Abbie Kromarek, and Hannah Darnall all notched three aces at the service line to complete the offensive stat leaders. Defensively, Kromarek and Darnall each recorded a solo block. Madelynn Dougherty covered the floor well with nine digs, followed by Brooke Rafert with seven.

JV vs. Creighton

A 2-set victory was captured by the Lady Pirate JV team against Creighton on Tuesday, September 5.

Set scores were 25-19 and 25-23.

The first set the Pirate group came out and played well but missed some key serves to allow the Bulldogs to stay close.  Second set we were down by as much as 8 points, but the team kept their composure and rallied back to achieve the win, said Coach Boyer.

Peighton Arlt led the net play and stayed aggressive up front the entire match.  Assists were evenly distributed by Mallory Mauer and Shayla Jacobsen with five a piece.  Kill category was also pretty evenly distributed within our middle and outside hitters including Kaydance Maertins, Peighton Arlt, Addy Hodson, Emma Sauser, and Kenzie Doerr.

“We will continue to work on our communication along with one of our main goals of no dropped balls.  One of the positives from the entire group was their aggressiveness on our out of system third hits,” said Boyer.

C Team vs. Creighton

The Plainview C-Team took on the Lady Bulldogs of Creighton.

It was a tough, 3 set battle with the Lady Pirates claiming victory.  After a difficult 1st set, the Lady Pirates were able to make the needed adjustments and sail to victory, 14-21, 21-12, and 15-8.

The Lady Pirates were strong from the serving line and offensively at the net.  Rylie Miller led the way by chalking up 7 kills, 1 block, and 1 ace.  Jaylin Johnson had 10 set assists and 2 kills.  Kenzie Doerr had 4 set assists and 3 kills.

Adalyn Dummer and Charley Pittet each had 4 kills a piece.  Meleah Buck recorded 1 block and Avery Hardisty 9 digs.  The Lady Pirates were back in action on September 9 at a C-Team Tournament in Randolph.
