Brendan Weber drives past his Neligh opponent.

The Plainview Pirate boys basketball team improved their record to 8-3 over the past week with victories over the Summerland Bobcats and the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors on Tuesday, Jan. 2 and Friday, Jan. 5. The Pirates now sit with a four-game win streak dating back to Dec. 28, 2023. Plainview will look to continue their series of victories with contests on Thursday, Jan. 11 against Stanton and Friday, Jan. 12 against the Bloomfield Bees.

In their most recent matchup, the Pirates took on the Warriors of N-O in Plainview. This contest was heavily one-sided in favor of the Pirates. From the get-go, it was clear the Warriors had no chance at stopping the offensive attack of the Pirates, as Plainview would jump out to an early 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Unfortunately for the Pirates, their defense would struggle in the second quarter, and after allowing 13 points the Pirates went into halftime with a commanding 34-18 lead, needing just one more good quarter to put the game on ice. The Pirates were able to get that quarter right out of halftime, putting on a parade of shooting and a clinic on the defensive end to outscore the Warriors 17-3 in the third quarter to all-but secure themselves the victory.

After another dominating quarter, the Pirates waltzed away with a 68-23 win over the Warriors, keeping them at just one win on the season. In their dominating performance offensively, the Pirates were able to get nine shooters in the scoring column. Leading the way for Plainview was Karter Lingenfelter with 15 points, followed by Spencer Hille with 13, Kohen Lingenfelter with 12, the duo of Brendan Weber and Harrison Thor with eight, Gage Walton with four, Braedon Kment and Rece Frahm with three, and Wyatt Schroth with two.

In their first matchup of the week on Tuesday, Jan. 2, the Pirates travelled to Summerland to take on a top-10 team in C2 based on power points, the Summerland Bobcats. The contest started as most would imagine, with both team going back-and-forth consistently, ending the first quarter with both teams tied at 12. In the second quarter, the Pirates turned up their dials on the defensive end, holding the Bobcats to just one point of offense to build a nine-point lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Bobcats still had trouble adjusting to the defense of Plainview. Scoring just seven points, the Bobcats were outscored by eight points, putting the Pirates one quarter away from victory. Despite Summerland’s best efforts to come back, the deficit built by the Pirates was too much to overcome in just one quarter as Plainview went on to win by a final score of 50-31 to improve their record to 7-3 at the time.

“I’m very proud of the effort overall given by the boys against Summerland,” Head Coach Trent Simpson said. “I thought we matched up well overall across the board. We were able to bother them with our switches on screens, did a good job of limiting dribble penetration, contested shooters, and had great help side defense. This was the best defense we have played as a team overall.”

Leading the way in the contest for the Pirates was Hille with 18 points, followed by Weber with 16, Kohen Lingenfelter with eight, Karter Lingenfelter with six, and the trio of King, Kment, and Thor each with two to round out the scoring.
