The Plainview Lady Pirates improved their regular-season record to 6-1 with wins over the Creighton Bulldogs and Archangels Catholic Defenders this past week.

Most recently, the Lady Pirates took on the Archangels Catholic Defenders in Humphrey on Thursday, Sept. 11.

On the road, the Lady Pirates and Defenders went back and forth in a five-set classic.

In set one, it was the Defenders who managed to get out in front early with a 25-21 victory.

The Pirates didn’t allow that good feeling to last long for the Defenders, however, as they managed to pull themselves together for back-to-back 25-20 wins in sets two and three to immediately put the home team on the ropes.

Despite momentum flowing with the Pirates, set four saw a shift in the contest, as Archangels Catholic figured out a way to rebound.

While the Pirates did their best to stop the Defenders flurry of offensive production, Archangels Catholic managed to earn the largest victory of the contest with a 25-15 win in set four to send the match to a winner-take-all set number five.

As expected, set five was a back-and-forth affair in which neither team was able to pull away for most of the set.

After many points were scored back-and-forth, it was the Pirates who eventually managed to pull away and close out the match with a 15-12 victory to claim the 3-2 match win on the road.

Leading the offensive attack for the Pirates in their victory over the Defenders was the duo of Kenzie Doerr and Riley Miller, who combined for 20 kills in the contest.

Also contributing to the Pirates win were Kaydance Maertins with two blocks, Kenadee Doerr with 18 digs, Emma Sauser with 18 digs, and Mallory Mauer with 29 assists.

Prior to their five-set victory over Archangels Catholic, the Lady Pirates took on the Creighton Bulldogs in Plainview on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Against the Lady Bulldogs, the Pirates earned their fifth win of the season in much less stressful fashion.

In set one, both teams came out of the gate ready to play as points were swapped to begin the set.

It wasn’t until approximately halfway through the set that Plainview was finally able to get on a roll and increased their lead to 14-10. From there, they never looked back as they earned the 25-17 victory to go up 1-0.

In set two, the Pirates took control early with a 13-8 lead. While the Bulldogs continued to attempt to slow down Plainview, it just couldn’t be done, and the Pirates cruised to a 25-15 win to go up 2-0.

In set three, it was clear that the Pirates had Creighton on the ropes as the Bulldogs couldn’t gather any momentum and the Pirates bulldozed their way to an emphatic 25-9 win to clinch the sweep.

Leading the way for the Pirates in their sweep over the Bulldogs were numerous athletes, including Kara Lingenfelter with 13 kills, Kenzie Doerr with 15 digs, and Mauer with 31 assists.
