The Plainview junior varsity boys’ basketball team was back in action this past week after a long winter break and went 2-0 with wins over Summerland and Neligh-Oakdale to improve their record to 6-3.

Most recently, the junior varsity Pirates took on the Neligh-Oakdale Warriors in Plainview on Friday, Jan. 9.

In a two-quarter contest, the Pirates got to work in a hurry. With stout defense, the Pirates were able to hold the Warriors to just three points of offense in the first quarter to take a commanding 15-3 lead into the second.

In the second and final quarter, the Warriors were able to find their footing, but it was too-little-too-late. Despite the Warriors’ newfound offensive success, the Pirates managed to hang on for the 27-13 win at home.

Leading the way for the Pirates in their victory over Neligh-Oakdale were Jaxon Lorenz with seven points, the quartet of Blake Foster, Kobe Maertins, Colt Hoffman, and Bastion Curtiss each with four points, and the duo of Cody Hoffman and Brayden Bruha each with two points.

Prior to their win over Neligh-Oakdale, the junior varsity Pirates hit the road to take on the Summerland Bobcats on Tuesday, Jan. 6 in their first game back from winter break.

In yet another two-quarter game, the Pirates looked fresh as they came out with enthusiasm in the first quarter. With strong defense and high-percentage shots, the Pirates were able to take a commanding 13-5 lead into the final quarter.

In the second and final quarter, the Bobcats refused to go down without a fight, and lit up the field on offense to slowly crept back into the ballgame.

Fortunately, while their defense struggled to make stops, the Pirates offense continued to do its job. So, when the final buzzer sounded, the Pirates had done just enough to hang on for the 23-21 win.

Leading the way for the Pirates in their close victory over Summerland were Braeden Kment with seven points, Curtiss with four points, Lorenz with four points, Foster with four points, and the duo of Maertins and Colt Hoffman each with two.
