When temperatures climb, water becomes one of the most important nutrients in a cowherd. We can spend a lot of time thinking about grazing and mineral programs, but neither goes very far if cattle don’t have enough clean water.
Water intake changes with heat, humidity, diet, and stage of production. A general guideline is that lactating cows need about two gallons per 100 pounds of body weight per day. Bulls and dry cows need closer to one to one and a half gallons. For many spring-calving pairs in hot weather, that can mean 24 to 28 gallons per day for the cow, plus another 5 to 10 gallons for the calf. Larger cows, dry forage, salty feeds, or higher temperatures can push needs even higher.
Access matters too. Think about the whole system: source, pump, pipeline, storage, and tank. Cattle often drink in groups during hot weather, so a system that looks adequate across a full day may still fall short during peak use. Windmills may need more backup storage because pumping depends on wind. Solar systems need capacity and storage for cloudy periods and overnight use. Electric pumps are usually more consistent, but should still be checked for flow rate, pressure, and reliability.
Water temperature can also affect intake. Large tanks store more water, but if water sits and heats up, cattle may drink less. A smaller tank with faster recharge may provide fresher, cooler water, as long as it can keep up with demand. Temporary systems need extra attention. Above-ground hoses or black poly pipe in the sun can heat water quickly, and the first water reaching the tank may be extremely hot. Flushing lines, shading pipe where possible, or keeping water moving can help.
Calves are easy to overlook. If cows drink a tank down first, calves may have trouble reaching water, especially with slow refill or low water levels. Creep access to a calf-height tank, or adjusting tank height and float settings, may be worth considering.
Water quality is the other major concern. Drought, heat, and low pond levels can concentrate minerals, nitrates, and sulfates. Nitrates are especially important because the total risk comes from both feed and water. A feed source and water source may each test within acceptable limits, but together push cattle into a danger zone. This matters when cattle are grazing drought-stressed forages, crop residues, or annual forages that may already be higher in nitrates.
Surface water deserves extra attention in July. Ponds and dams may be lower, warmer, and more stagnant, creating a better environment for blue-green algae. It is most common during hot, sunny weather and may look like green or turquoise paint, pea soup, or scum on the surface. If blue-green algae is suspected, keep cattle out and find another water source until the risk can be evaluated.
Pond management can help reduce risk. Cattle standing in water to fight flies, or walking through ponds to drink, can stir up sediment and add nutrients from manure and urine. That can make water quality problems worse and encourage algae growth. Limiting pond access, pumping water from deeper areas to a tank, and staying ahead of fly pressure can all help protect water quality.
The best approach is to check water often. Watch recharge rates during peak use. Make sure calves can reach water. Feel the temperature, especially in temporary systems. Look for changes in smell, color, or algae growth. Test water when quality is questionable.
Good water is easy to overlook until there is a problem. But in July heat, it is one of the simplest places to reduce stress, protect performance, and keep cattle healthy.
