American Legion members practice helpfulness out in the community and welcome volunteers to join them. “In May, we fluff poppies for Poppy Days and distribute them,” said Janovec. “Volunteers will fluff poppies. It is not hard, but it takes a while to fluff 300 poppies.”

In addition to fluffing poppies, volunteers place flags and medallions on headstones at the cemeteries. “We have maps with past veterans’ names, and someone would check off a veteran’s name. We do this the Friday before Memorial Day and take them down Memorial Day evening.”

Children of all ages are encouraged to volunteer with their parents.
